What is MOTS-C?
MOTS-c stands for "mitochondrial open reading frame of the 12S rRNA-c". It is a short peptide encoded not in the nuclear genome but in mitochondrial DNA, within the gene for the 12S ribosomal RNA (MT-RNR1), and it belongs to the family of mitochondrial-derived peptides (MDPs). Its 16-residue sequence is MRWQEMGYIFYPRKLR. First described in 2015, MOTS-c is investigated in laboratory research as a signal in mitochondria-to-nucleus communication: it is studied for its interaction with the AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) pathway, the folate cycle and purine biosynthesis, and its translocation to the cell nucleus under metabolic stress, where it is examined for effects on gene expression.
