What is KPV?
KPV is a three-amino-acid peptide: L-lysyl-L-prolyl-L-valine. It corresponds to residues 11–13 of α-MSH, so it is often listed as α-MSH (11–13). Its molecular formula is C16H30N4O4, with a molecular weight of about 342.4 g/mol. Because it is so small, KPV is investigated as a minimal fragment of the parent melanocortin hormone.
In laboratory research, KPV is studied at the cellular level in relation to inflammatory signaling pathways such as NF-κB. Cell studies have also examined its uptake into intestinal epithelial cells through the PepT1 peptide transporter. Whether it acts through melanocortin receptors, or mainly inside the cell after uptake, remains an open question in the literature.
