What is Melanotan II?
Melanotan II was developed at the University of Arizona as a conformationally constrained analog of α-MSH, the endogenous melanocortin peptide. Its sequence is Ac-Nle-cyclo[Asp-His-D-Phe-Arg-Trp-Lys]-NH2: a lactam bridge between aspartic acid and lysine closes the ring, and the D-phenylalanine substitution adds stability against enzymatic degradation. In laboratory research, Melanotan II is investigated as a non-selective agonist of the melanocortin receptors MC1R, MC3R, MC4R and MC5R, and it is used as a tool compound to study melanocortin signaling pathways.
