NAD+ is the oxidized form of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (also written β-NAD or NAD), a dinucleotide made of two nucleotides, one carrying an adenine base and one carrying nicotinamide, joined through their phosphate groups. In laboratory research, NAD+ is studied as a central redox cofactor: it cycles with its reduced form, NADH, as an electron carrier in glycolysis, the citric acid cycle and mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation. It is also investigated as the substrate consumed by NAD+-dependent enzymes, including sirtuins, poly(ADP-ribose) polymerases (PARPs) and CD38, which makes it a standard reagent in cell metabolism, enzyme kinetics and DNA-repair pathway research.
