Selank is a heptapeptide with the sequence Thr-Lys-Pro-Arg-Pro-Gly-Pro (TKPRPGP), molecular formula C33H57N11O9 and a molecular weight of about 751.9 g/mol. It was designed at the Institute of Molecular Genetics of the Russian Academy of Sciences by extending tuftsin (Thr-Lys-Pro-Arg), a tetrapeptide fragment of the immunoglobulin G heavy chain, with a C-terminal Pro-Gly-Pro sequence that increases its resistance to breakdown by peptidases.
In laboratory research, Selank is investigated in neuroscience and immunology models for its interaction with GABAergic signaling and the expression of related genes, its inhibition of enkephalin-degrading enzymes, and its effects on cytokine gene expression and monoamine pathways.
