What is Semax?
Semax is a heptapeptide with the sequence Met-Glu-His-Phe-Pro-Gly-Pro (MEHFPGP), molecular formula C37H51N9O10S and a molecular weight of about 813.9 g/mol. It combines the ACTH(4-7) fragment of adrenocorticotropic hormone (Met-Glu-His-Phe) with a C-terminal Pro-Gly-Pro sequence that increases its resistance to breakdown by peptidases. Unlike full-length ACTH, it lacks the hormone's adrenal-stimulating (corticotropic) activity. Like Selank, it was developed at the Institute of Molecular Genetics of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
In laboratory research, Semax is investigated in neuroscience models for its effects on the expression of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and its receptor TrkB, and for its influence on dopaminergic and serotonergic pathways.
