What is SS-31?
SS-31 belongs to the Szeto-Schiller (SS) family of cell-permeable peptides. Its sequence is D-Arg-Dmt-Lys-Phe-NH2, where Dmt is 2′,6′-dimethyltyrosine: four residues with alternating basic (cationic) and aromatic amino acids, including a D-amino acid at the first position.
This structure allows the peptide to cross cell membranes and concentrate at the inner mitochondrial membrane. SS-31 is studied in laboratory research for its binding to cardiolipin, a phospholipid of the inner mitochondrial membrane, and is investigated in cell and tissue models of electron transport chain function, mitochondrial membrane structure and reactive oxygen species production.
