Peptides for weight loss: what the research says
The peptides with the most evidence for weight loss are those that mimic gut hormones: semaglutide (GLP-1) and tirzepatide (GIP and GLP-1), both approved prescription medicines. In their main trials, weight fell by an average of 14.9% and 20.9%. Retatrutide and cagrilintide are still investigational. No "natural" or research peptide is approved for weight loss.

How weight-loss peptides work
After a meal, the gut releases peptide hormones such as GLP-1 and GIP, and the pancreas releases amylin. These signals help regulate blood sugar, slow stomach emptying and act on appetite and fullness in the brain.
Medicines in this family are synthetic versions of those hormones, modified to last days in the body instead of minutes. That is why they are given once a week, always on prescription.
The ones FDA has approved
- Semaglutide (GLP-1 agonist): Wegovy for weight management and Ozempic for type 2 diabetes, from Novo Nordisk.
- Tirzepatide (GIP and GLP-1 agonist): Zepbound for weight management and Mounjaro for type 2 diabetes, from Eli Lilly.
- Liraglutide (daily GLP-1 agonist): Saxenda for weight management.
Tesamorelin also reduces abdominal fat, but its only approval is for adults with HIV and lipodystrophy; it is not a weight-loss medicine.
What the clinical trials showed
Average weight change in the main trials, at the highest dose studied and against placebo:
- Semaglutide, STEP 1 (2021): −14.9% at 68 weeks, against −2.4% with placebo.
- Tirzepatide, SURMOUNT-1 (2022): −20.9% at 72 weeks, against −3.1%.
- Cagrilintide + semaglutide, REDEFINE 1 (2025): −20.4% at 68 weeks, against −3.0%. Not approved.
- Retatrutide, phase 2 (2023): −24.2% at 48 weeks, against −2.1%. In phase 3, not approved.
These are different studies, so they should not be read as a ranking. In all of them the most common adverse events were gastrointestinal (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation), mainly while the dose was being raised.
These results come from medicines manufactured and tested in controlled trials. They do not describe what a research peptide would do: it has no approval, no dose and no safety data in people.
Other peptides mentioned for weight loss
Names such as MOTS-c, AOD-9604, 5-amino-1MQ or "belly-fat peptides" circulate on social media. None is an approved weight-loss medicine, and for several there are no published controlled trials in people. MOTS-c, for example, is studied in cells and animals as a metabolic regulator, but FDA has found no human exposure data.
The risks of unapproved products
FDA has warned about versions of semaglutide and tirzepatide sold without approval: with wrong doses, salt forms different from the approved medicine (such as semaglutide sodium or acetate) and, in some cases, contamination. If you are looking for weight-loss treatment, the route is a licensed doctor in Puerto Rico.
Research peptides, such as our tirzepatide or retatrutide, are sold for the laboratory only. There, what matters is the identity and purity of the lot, checked on its COA.

Frequently asked questions
Which peptides work for weight loss?
Those with trials and approval are semaglutide (Wegovy), tirzepatide (Zepbound) and liraglutide (Saxenda), all on prescription. Retatrutide and cagrilintide with semaglutide are investigational.
How long do weight-loss peptides take to work?
In the trials, weight loss built up over months: the main results were measured between 48 and 72 weeks. In retatrutide’s phase 2 trial there was already a large reduction at 24 weeks, which kept growing to 48.
Do peptides burn belly fat?
GLP-1 agonists reduce total weight, abdominal fat included. Tesamorelin is approved specifically for visceral fat, but only in adults with HIV and lipodystrophy.
Are there natural peptides for weight loss?
The body makes GLP-1, GIP and amylin naturally, but they last minutes. Collagen peptide supplements do not act like those medicines and are not approved for weight loss.
How are weight-loss peptides used?
Approved ones are used on prescription, following their label and your doctor. We give no instructions for use: the peptides we sell are for laboratory research only.
